HEART-TO-HEART

HEART-TO-HEART

San Diego, CA (August 27, 2024) – For over 30 years, Camarada has been redefining the chamber music experience, blending the elegance of classical traditions with the vibrant sounds of jazz, tango, and beyond. Camarada’s performances aren’t just concerts—they are journeys through a rich tapestry of genres, delivered by world-class musicians who bring passion and creativity to every note. Whether you’re drawn to the timeless beauty of classical music or the fiery rhythms of tango, Camarada offers something truly unique for all patrons. Join us and discover why audiences have been captivated by our artistry for three decades — where every performance is an invitation to explore and connect through the universal language of music.

This year, Camarada invites audiences to celebrate its 30th Anniversary with the 2024-2025 season, Eléctrica. Featuring Baroque classics, familiar pop and jazz standards, passionate tangos, and multiple world premieres, Eléctrica will present eight thrilling concerts across three venues throughout San Diego and La Jolla, each offering unique ways for audiences to engage with the local cultural scene.

The season kicks off with Elemental at the Mingei International Museum, where Camarada continues its tenure as Artists-in-Residence. Inspired by the 4 elements, Elemental includes evocative and impressionistic pieces by Michael Torke, Philippe Gaubert, and Zoltán Kodály. This concert will also feature the season’s first commissioned work, The Elements, written by rising composer Oliviana Marie, a member of the LA Philharmonic’s Composer Fellowship Program and a current student at USC Thornton School of Music.

The fall also marks Camarada’s return to UC San Diego’s Park & Market venue for Reflexión y Ritual, a concert featuring music by Mexican composers with a special focus on our binational region. This program includes works by Gabriela Ortiz, Leonardo Coral, José Rolón, and Camarada Composer-in-Residence Andrés Martín. Camarada is proud to continue its tradition of supporting visual artists through commissioned work, and Reflexión y Ritual will feature the unveiling of a new piece by celebrated Mexican artist Hugo Crosthwaite, the recent winner of the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery’s Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition.

Returning by popular demand is Charlie Brown Jingles & Jazz at the Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center. Quickly becoming a La Jolla holiday tradition, this concert features Peter Sprague’s toe-tapping arrangements of A Charlie Brown Christmas, with dazzling vocals by Allison Adams Tucker. Camarada also kicks off the new year at the Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center with What’s Your Händel? Baroque music lovers will delight in hearing popular pieces by George Frideric Handel, including Lascia ch’io pianga from Rinaldo and the Harp Concerto Op. 4, No. 6, paired with contemporary works such as San Diego-based composer Jordan Kuspa’s Fire Flowers and Heitor Villa-Lobos’ Quintette Instrumental.

Camarada has long been celebrated for its expertise in tango, and the 2024-2025 season will include a second South American tour for The Tango Camarada Quartet. Their upcoming performances promise to captivate audiences with the vibrant energy and soul of this beloved musical genre. But audiences don’t have to cross the equator to experience the thrill of tango—Camarada is bringing its signature sound to San Diego for a week-long tango festival at the end of February. Two concerts, Tango Íntimo at UC San Diego Park & Market and The Art of Tango at the Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center, will be included as part of the festival, featuring the acclaimed bandoneonist Pablo Jaurena, award-winning tango dancers Carolina Jaurena and Andrés Bravo, and a brand-new tango commission by Andrés Martín.

In the spring, Camarada dives back into its 30-year archive to present Luscious at the Mingei International Museum, a whimsical evening featuring Camarada favorites throughout the years, with music by Czech composer Bohuslav Martinů, Gilad Cohen, George Gershwin, and Claude Debussy, among others. Finally, All You Need is Love: Music of the Beatles takes audiences back in time to groove along to the music of the Fab Four at the Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center. Peter Sprague returns with his exceptional ensemble and guest vocalist Rebecca Jade.
