Camarada’s first Tango festival features three concerts in five days, featuring
The Camarada Tango Quartet and special international guests.

San Diego, CA (February 9, 2025) — Camarada has long been known for their dedication to the art of tango music and performance, with previous tango programming including The Tango Camarada Quartet in sold-out concerts in venues across San Diego and performances on tour in South America. Now Camarada brings their fiery, historically-informed approach to tango to its new The International Art of Tango Festival, featuring three concerts in San Diego, La Jolla, and Tijuana and a variety of guest performers.

The festival kicks off on Tuesday, February 25 with Tango Intimo at UC San Diego’s innovative Park & Market performance space. This intimate concert allows audiences an up-close look at the modern world of tango, featuring compositions by Camarada Composer-in-Residence and double bassist Andrés Martín and by guest bandoneonist Pablo Jaurena. Jaurena and Martín are both renowned tango masters on the forefront of new musical developments in the tango world, and they will precede the concert with an informal discussion about their music and compositional works. These modern pieces will be played in conversation with chestnuts from the tango canon by the legendary Astor Piazzolla, with solo and duo performances on flute, violin, double bass, piano, and bandoneon.

Camarada also takes the electrifying energy of tango to larger audiences with The Art of Tango. Following the success of last season’s sold-out Tango Buenos Aires, this concert adds thrilling tango dance performed by award-winning dancers Carolina Jaurena and Andrés Bravo to accompany virtuosic tango music from the heart of Argentina. The Art of Tango will see the world premiere of the hauntingly beautiful Brutal, composed by Andrés Martín. Brutal is the third of Camarada’s 2024-2025 season commissioned works. Acclaimed bandoneonist Pablo Jaurena joins Camarada once again and will perform a stirring solo bandoneon performance, alongside pieces by tango greats Pedro Maffia and Aníbal Troilo.

The Art of Tango will be performed in two locations. On Thursday, February 27, Camarada travels across the border to Tijuana’s cultural hub, Centro Cultural Tijuana (CECUT). CECUT’s spectacular Sala de Espectáculos seats 1,000 and will offer free tickets the day of the performance, sponsored by the Mexican Consulate of Cultural Events, the Center for U.S.-Mexican Studies, and the San Diego Commission for Arts & Culture. Finally, The International Art of Tango Festival wraps up at The Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center on Saturday, March 1 for the second performance of The Art of Tango. A jewel of the San Diego cultural scene, the Conrad is Camarada’s home base in La Jolla and will also present Camarada’s upcoming concert All You Need is Love: The Music of the Beatles later this spring in its state-of-the-art concert hall.
